Trends of Slovakia’s used car market

Slovakia’s used car market in 2025 is shaped by strong manufacturing output, evolving consumer habits, and an increasingly digital approach to buying and selling vehicles. For used car dealers, the year brings both opportunities and challenges as buyers seek affordable, trustworthy cars in a market mainly composed of older vehicles.

Market overview

Slovakia produces more cars per capita than any other nation in the world, but most of these vehicles are exported. Domestically, Slovakia’s used car market relies heavily on older inventory and imports.

Slovakia imports a large share of its used vehicles from Germany, Austria, and other EU neighbors. Low registration costs for older models make imports attractive but also bring quality concerns. Used car dealers who source reliable imports with verifiable histories have an advantage in building customer trust.

While new registrations rose 14.4% year-on-year in October 2024, the pace slowed to 4.9% in May 2025. This cooling in new car demand often shifts more buyers toward the second-hand segment, good news for used car dealers.

In addition, there is, as of 2025, an ongoing economic consolidation, which negatively affects the behavior of end buyers, who often postpone the purchase of both new and used vehicles.

EV adoption is still limited

Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for just 2.38% of new car sales in 2024, with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) at 2.41%. This low penetration rate means EVs remain a niche category in Slovakia’s new car market. It also implies that on the used car market, the dealers are still focused on efficient and cost-effective petrol and diesel vehicles.

But the market is still growing. According to the Slovak Electromobility Association (SEVA), 2024 saw a year-on-year increase of 53% for BEVs only, equating to 5,380 BEVs more on the road. This number is still quite small, but the increase is promising for the coming years.

Consumer preferences and transparency

Like in most countries, more buyers are turning to online marketplaces, making digital presence essential for used car dealers. Consumers are also gravitating toward certified pre-owned vehicles over high-risk, unverified options. Dealers who provide certified histories and inspection reports can differentiate themselves.

For the year 2024, CarVertical reported 60.5% of damaged cars but for an average damage value of 3010€ which ranks Slovakia as the third less expensive countries in terms of damage cost of the 25 countries studied.

Implications for used car dealers in Slovakia

  • Older models still dominate, cars over 10 years old remain the volume drivers, especially when backed by reliable maintenance records.
  • With EV demand still limited, hybrids and efficient petrol/diesel cars sell faster.
  • Inspection reports, mileage verification, and detailed service histories build trust in a market wary of fraud.
  • Dealers who invest in high-quality online listings, clear photos, and pricing transparency reach more buyers in Slovakia’s used car market.
